John Hurst

John retired after a career in civil engineering and land reclamation in particular to take up his passion for art and painting. "My paints had been put away for over 40 years and then suddenly it was time to get them out again. That's not quite true - I did have a little dabble with oil paints some 20 years ago, but once I retired and discovered acrylic paints, then a whole new dimension opened for me."

He has been following several of the WEA Art Courses held in Abergavenny and Llangynidr. He says that the courses have helped him experiment with various materials and media, giving him the confidence to begin to develop his own style in painting.

John has undertaken landscapes and a variety of projects which involved painting to specific themes. "Trees, was one such theme and I produced three paintings within the project - Willow and Water is one of the three. Another theme was a story from the Mabinogi and again I produced three paintings. Inspired by David Hockney, I painted landscapes of trees, one for each season.
