Teena Hughes

Teena Hughes was born and raised in the valleys of South Wales.  Her grandfather was a miner in Beynon's Colliery and so her background is typical of the area.  She says,"I am Welsh with Romani ancestory and I was always obsessively interested in art.  After leaving school, I went to Newport Institute of Higher Education to study for a foundation diploma, where I met artists such as John Selway and Ivor Davies, who have become great influences on my work."

Teena attended Cardiff College of Art at Howard Gardens in the 80's.  "I am a single mum and after working in various strange jobs, including embalming, I have worked solely as a fine artist and photographer, which is where my heart and soul truly lie."

Teena has exhibited in the Artist Mundi and Welsh Artist of the Year Exhibition, as well as at various other group shows. "I am always building up my portfolio of work, and looking to have a first solo exhibition soon, and then to exhibit more frequently and develop my art practice."

She lives in Brynmawr but presently has her studio in Abergavenny.  She works as a fine artist and photographer.  Teena likes to think of her work as visual poetry, objects placed in rhythmic ways in place of words, to create ambience and suggestion rather than obvious intent.

Some of her recent work has been on display in the exhibition at the Artworkhouse Gallery, next to her studio.
