Irene Evans

Irene was born and educated in London.   She studied 'O' level Art but did not follow it up after leaving school.

After having worked as a secretary she married and moved to live in Rochester in Kent.   After the children arrived Irene became a
theatrical costumier and worked for the BBC, ITV, Covent Garden
and other various theatres.

In 1987 she moved to Wales but it was until 1997 that she took up painting.    She explains, "I got fed up with watching my husband doing all the creative things, so I decided to have a go myself.   I went to Marjorie Stinchcombe for initial lessons, but then branched out on my own when Marjorie became ill."

Irene joined Abergavenny Art Group in 1997 and in 2000 she became its chairman.   Around about that time she also became chairman of the Brynmawr Art and Craft Society, the post that she still holds.

She is a committee helper of the Abergavenny Art Group.
