Chris Porter

Chris dabbled with art briefly as a teenager but he concentrated on science and he did not paint again until just a few years ago, and then only occasionally when he was on holiday.

Retiring early after a 40 year career in industry in various engineering, technical and managerial roles, he now has a bit more time to paint.  He says,"I like painting a subject in front of me, preferably outdoors. After struggling with watercolour and acrylic I have discovered water-based oils, and the pochade box."

During the Covid-19 lockdown, the Art Group’s monthly competition has been very welcome for several artists and it challenged Chris to paint subjects he would never have considered.  He is also very fortunate to have space in an attic bolt-hole above the garage, which has become his ‘studio’.

"I try to capture light and colour, inspired by artists such as Turner, the Impressionists, Sorolla and, closer to home local artist, Louise Collis.

"My other interests include cycling, mountain biking, fixing things, travel to France, Spain and Scotland, and exploring the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains."

He is a member of the Abergavenny Art Group.
